The Roofing Process

Learn More About How Your New Roof Will Be Applied

Trinity Home Renovations, Inc. provides roofing systems with products from GAF. Founded in 1886, GAF has become North America’s largest manufacturer of commercial and residential roofing.

Even with the cold Rochester weather, we generally will work on roofing projects year-round!

GAF Roof Process

Ground/Home/Shrub Protection:
Tarps will be used as needed to protect shrubs, planting areas and decks. We do our best to protect your property from the very dirty and extremely heavy job of removing your old roof. If you have any plantings near the drip line of the house that are delicate or have great value please tell us and we can build solid protection over those areas.

Roof Removal:
Remove all existing roofing. The existing roof will be removed down to the wood decking and deposited into a dumpster to be provided by Trinity Home Renovations, Inc.. All gutters will be cleaned out, grounds cleaned up daily. The yard and drive will be swept with a rolling magnetic nail bar to reduce the chance of injury or property damage. On cedar shake roof removals the will be debris that will fall into attic, so please cover or remove any valuable items.

Roof Deck Preparation:
Roof decking is the wood that spans across the rafters and supports the roofing shingles. When the old roof is removed it is critical to inspect the roof decking; roof decking is usually plywood or 1x6 or 1x8 boards. If any rotted plywood or boards are found they must be replaced.  Boards with cracks, warping and large loose knots must also be replaced. Skipping by damaged decking will cause the roof to fail prematurely or require expensive repairs long before the roof is ready to be replaced.

Drip Edge:
Furnish and install new baked enamel aluminum drip edge at all eaves. Although not usually visible when finished this durable metal detail will direct roof water directly into the existing gutters. Drip edge protects the roof decking and fascia board from rot and provides a neat clean profile.

Leak Barrier Protection:
We install new GAF ice and water shield underlayment along all eaves, valleys and penetrations. Penetrations include plumbing vents, skylights and chimneys. Waterproof underlayment self-adheres to the wood roof deck and helps to protect against interior leakage and subsequent damage from wind driven rain, ice and snow dams and freeze back conditions.

Shingle Underlayment:
The standard underlayment has always been 15# or 30# felt. We highly recommend installing Premium Roof Deck Protection such as GAF Deck Armor or Tiger Paw. These specially designed underlayment’s provides a critical extra layer of protection between your shingles and your roof deck to help prevent wind driven rain (or water from other sources) from infiltrating under your shingles and causing damage to your roof structure or to the inside of your home. In addition, premium-quality roof deck protection will:

  • Reduce trapped moisture from inside your attic, allowing it to escape (to help prevent structural decay, mold, and mildew)
  • Provide longer-lasting leak protection than conventional “felts” (which can rot or become brittle before your shingles reach their useful life)

Vent Pipes:
We install new neoprene and aluminum vent collars at all existing plumbing vents. These are small pipes that project out of the roof and allow air into the plumbing system. We will install an aluminum base flashing with a neoprene gasket to keep the pipe/roof joint watertight. We will paint the plumbing vents with paint color of your choosing.

Low Slope Roofing:
A Self-Adhering Roofing System will provide long-lasting protection for the low slope areas of your property without the danger or hassles associated with the installation of other conventional roofing products.
Liberty™ systems are applied without torches, open flames, hot asphalt, or messy solvent-based adhesives. Unlike traditional roofing systems, they can be installed easily and quickly by a small roofing crew, without the hassles of bulky equipment or unpleasant odors.

Shingles: Design your new roof with  GAF’s
The roofing shingles will be installed over the roof deck and fastened with 1 1/4" electro galvanized roofing nails. The nails are treated with a rust inhibitive coating and are placed along each shingle in accordance with manufacturer specifications. The proper placement of the nails is critical to prevent leakage and shingle blow off in high winds.

Venting:
We install a new GAF Cobra Snow Country ridge vent over all main ridges. At the peak of the roof a continuous gap will be cut out of the roof decking. Then the ridge vent will be installed over the gap at the ridge and fastened. The next step is the installation of the matching ridge cap shingles. The new ridge cap shingles are fastened over the ridge vent with 2" galvanized roofing nails placed on each side of the ridge. These nails will be totally concealed by each subsequent course of shingle caps. The ridge vent provides your home with the necessary exhaust ventilation to prolong the life of the roofing shingles and wood decking. This will also provide cooler attic temperatures in the summer and less moisture laden damaging air in the winter.

Chimney Flashing:
First we install new GAF ice and water shield up all sides of the chimney and out onto the shingle underlayment. Then we install a new step flashing at the bottom (low point) of the chimney. Along the sides of the chimney we install new step flashing between each shingle course. Over the step flashing we install aluminum counter flashing, the counter flashing is designed to cover the top of the step flashing to keep it water tight. Finally we seal the joint between the counter flashing and the brick chimney with tri-polymer sealant. These flashing details exceed industry standards so that the chimney/roof connection (a typical problem area) remains watertight for the life of the roof.

Clean Up:
We sweep the yard, the flower beds and the driveway with a powerful magnetic bar; this will reduce the chances that any nails are left behind. Sometimes a few can pop up after a rain or a frost, if you find any please call us and we will sweep again. We clean up the grounds with brooms and blowers to gather up any shingle grit and dust. We pride ourselves not just on the great workmanship on the roof but also on the clean-up. Our goal is to have your grounds looking like we were never there.

Inspection:
Upon completion of the roof, flashings, gutters and grounds are inspected. We will check in with you and if anything needs attention it will be done immediately. You will be given a manufacturer’s warranty and all other necessary paper work. We will handle all necessary registration and filing if applicable.
